Welcome to Chicago's Greatest Youth Jiu-Jitsu program!
Recommended by the area's top youth councilors, we offer kids Martial Arts for ages 4 to 14. At Threshold Martial Arts, our students are on a unique path, developing life and self defense skills side by side. We focus on leadership development, problem solving skills & understanding bio-mechanics resulting in true ability backed confidence for your child.
Good leaders where once followers who paid attention to how they were being led. By verbally & physically demonstrating respect for our student's time, effort & future, Threshold's instructors portray key fundamentals of leadership. We combine these demonstrations of respect with civil acts designed to reinforce teamwork & promote goodwill. We then actively show our students how to do the same and teach them the benefits of these actions thus laying a path for future leaders to follow.
Problem Solving Skills
Nothing engages the mind like a puzzle that plays back. Jiu-Jitsu is the world of "what If?" With the endless opportunity for human interaction, the world of "Randori" (Live Grappling) is what makes the game alive. With the mind so involved in "what happens next?" students find themselves in a fun environment of perpetual problem solving. To get to that point, you need to understand the basic framework of the world of Jiu-Jitsu. This is done by staging situations and teaching students options for dealing with them. Later, it is a students own personality that makes them a unique Martial Artist.
The Bio-Mechanics of Martial Arts
Shhhhhhh...don't tell the kids they will be L-E-A-R-N-I-N-G! As "The Mother of all Martial Arts", Jiu-Jitsu teaches students to both take advantage of the bodies inherent vices, as well as, its strengths. Examples of this include; understanding & exploiting the limitations of human skeletal systems & the advantage of applying the force of large muscle groups against small ones. Additionally topics like; momentum, mass, force, energy, base & leverage will be part of the daily curriculum. Harvard University uses similar educational tactics to engage their students in the world of Natural/Bio Science.
Ability Backed Confidence
Why is Jiu-Jitsu a better choice than other Martial Arts? Today, with all existing options, Jiu-Jitsu is the choice of the United States Army, Navy, Air force & Marines, (as well thousands of municipal Police agencies), as the core of their Defensive Tactics (DT) courses. Threshold's Instructors work first hand with several local DT instructors, members of the US Marines, as well as, the Great Lakes Navel Base's training programs. Specifically, Jiu-Jitsu is designed for a smaller weaker opponent to gain control over a larger stronger one. Ultimately, Jiu-Jitsu is an extremely effective form of self defense which provides a measurable advantage for children.
Threshold's #1 rule is: "Avoid the fight at all cost." Threshold's #2 rule is: "If physically attacked, defend yourself." Our students rehearse these rules (and others) on a regular basis. As a result, combining verbal & physical skill sets to deal with situations; students will have the inner strength to avoid confrontation and the outer strength to safely handle them if all other options have been exhausted.
